For my UF Senior Project, I made a video game! My group used Unity and C# to create a murder mystery game, focused on telling a story through dialogue and utilizing a “bullet hell” style combat system.

The story focuses on a PI apprentice and their group of friends going away to a secluded island mansion for the weekend, when suddenly, a murder happens. One of your friends has killed your other friend, and you have to solve the mystery! One of our game’s goals was to provide mental health awareness, so the main character battles anxiety in order to solve the murder logically, without their feelings clouding their judgement.

Our combat system is emotion-based, where emotions from others and yourself are fighting against you. We integrated dialogue into the combat system to portray investigations of your friends as battles against their emotions.

My role was focused on creating the dialogue for the game. I helped create and code the dialogue mechanic for the game, and wrote all the dialogue for the game’s story. I also chose and implemented the sound effects and music, and created art assets for the game, such as the enemy sprites, bedroom furniture, and the dialogue box.

This semester-long project helped me learn how to collaborate with a group on a large project in limited time (3 months). We self-managed our schedule and tasks, and we were able to successfully deliver a final product that we’re proud of. I enjoyed the process of creating a video game, and I look forward to utilizing the skills I learned from this project in my future career.

We plan to upload our game to itch.io in the near future so others can play it!
